Dickinson, ND | 3 Day Itinerary

Dickinson, The Western Edge of North Dakota, is next to over 1.5 million acres of public land, prairies, rugged buttes, rivers, and plains wildlife. The Theodore Roosevelt National Park was once home to our 26th President, who ranched in the badlands during the 1800’s.

The Assumption Abbey church in Richardton, ND is a short drive from Dickinson, ND and is worth the drive!

Day 1
Your travels begin in downtown Mandan, ND, heading west along the Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway. Get off of the interstate and take time to drive through the communities that offer unique country atmosphere. While along the Scenic Byway, stop and tour the Assumption Abbey in Richardton. The Bavarian Romanesque structure was first completed in 1909 and was remodeled in 2001. The Abbey Church is a beautiful stop for all to enjoy!

Your next adventure will take you west on I-94 towards the Enchanted Highway. Turn left to Gladstone (Exit 72), where you will meet up with the first scenic structure, the Geese in Flight. Your travel of 32 miles will lead your group on a path of adventure viewing the GIANT metal sculptures. You will not want to miss the Tin Family, Teddy Roosevelt, Pheasants on the Prairie, and the Grasshoppers in the Field. At the end of the Enchanted Highway, you will find the quaint town of Regent. Here you will find the Enchanted Highway Gift Shop and the Hettinger County Historical Society Museum.

Travel back to Dickinson where you can have supper, and relax at one of our 20 lodging facilities.

The Badlands Dinosaur Museum at the Dickinson Museum Center in Dickinson, ND has 14 full-scale dinosaurs and amazing rock, mineral, and seashell collections.

Day 2
Begin your day with a hearty breakfast; you will need that to continue with a visit to the Dickinson Museum Center home to our famous Dinosaur Museum. You will travel back in time as you view life-sized dinosaurs, rock and mineral exhibits, and the seashell and fossil collections. Step into local history by entering the nearby Joachim Regional Museum. At the same complex, you can enjoy our Prairie Outpost Park, which takes you on an outside journey through southwestern North Dakota’s historic past. (Tours available) The adjacent Pioneer Machinery Hall is home to a threshing machine, a settler’s wooden shanty, and other early pioneer items.

Your next stop will be a visit to the Ukrainian Cultural Institute. Viewing the colorful Pysanka Egg collection will create a lasting impression as you continue your journey on the Western Edge.

Lunch is served! Whether you want fast food or a sit down meal, Dickinson offers a variety of restaurant choices.

The rest of your day can be spent shopping at some of our unique stores or enjoying a sweet and smooth honey wine and vineyard tour at Fluffy Fields Vineyard & Winery. Their orchards provide for unique and memorable alternatives to grape wines, such as Apple Rhubarb, Strawberry Rhubarb, and their specialty carrot wine, Naughty Bunny.

Day 3
Thank you for joining us! There are many routes you can choose to continue your travel, including a visit to the historical town of Medora or the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. From Dickinson, travel north on Highway 22 through Killdeer and continue north through the Little Missouri State Park until you reach Highway 23. Turning east will take you to New Town, home of the Native American MHA Interpretive Center. This tour is the Killdeer Mountain Four Bears Scenic Byway, designated an official state byway because of its unique and enchanting landscape.
