South Unit

The south unit of the park is located just 30 minutes from Dickinson and it features 36 miles of paved road winding through the badlands, perfect for a driving tour. The unit includes more than 60 miles of marked trails, plus countless unmarked trails. Riders are permitted in all areas of the park, except camping and picnicking areas and nature trails.

A horse campground is available in the south unit by reservation; back country horse camping is allowed.

Trails traverse a mixture of grasslands and badlands topography with some trails requiring steep climbs or descents. Water sources are unreliable; carry all that you anticipate needing. Trails are marked with carsonite posts with signs at intersections.

North Unit

The north unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park is located 53 miles north of Belfield. The 17 mile scenic drive includes over 40 miles of interconnecting trails which present hikers with spectacular badlands scenery.

Trails traverse a mixture of river bottom and grassy buttes with some trails requiring steep climbs or descents. Water sources are unreliable; carry all that you anticipate needing. Trails are marked with wooden posts with signs at intersections.
