Out of the Darkness Community Walk Planned
Post Date: Sep 04 2013
communitywalks_walkfeature.pngThe American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will be holding a Community Walk at Heart River Retreat (formerly Dickinson Teen Center) on Saturday, September 14th from 10 am – 12:30 pm.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walks are 3-5 mile walks taking place in hundreds of communities across the country this year, with the proceeds benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 13.7 minutes, claiming more than 38,000 lives each year. It is estimated that an attempt is made every minute, with close to one million people attempting suicide annually. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. among adults 18-65, the second leading cause of death among teens and young adults, and individuals ages 65 and older account for 16 percent of all suicide deaths.

By walking in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks, funds are raised for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, and provide support for survivors of suicide loss. In deciding to walk or donate, you are helping to making suicide prevention a national priority.

For more information on joining the Community Walk, or donate, contact Wilson McLaughlin at 260-4072 or go to www.afsp.com
