Northern Plains Ethnic Festival
Post Date: Aug 13 2013

Southwestern North Dakota is truly a melting pot and this weekend you can see why at the Northern Plains Ethnic Festival. If you have always wanted to try Smutskuechle (fry bread) prepared by the Germans from Russia or even Knudlova Polivka (noodle soup) made by local Czechoslovakians, you won’t want to miss this!

This annual festival will take place at the Prairie Outpost Park in Dickinson on Saturday and Sunday.  Founded in 1980, the event begins with opening ceremonies at 9am at the Ridgeway Lutheran Church in Pioneer Outpost Park. It is followed by entertainment and ethnic foods prepared by the Czechs, Germans from Russia, Scandinavians, Sons of Norway, and Ukrainians. An ethnic brunch on Sunday from 8am-1pm at the Elks Lodge concludes the event.

The location of the festival couldn’t be in a more perfect place in Dickinson. The Prairie Outpost Park is a 12-acre historic village that is home to several historic buildings that have been brought in from across southwestern North Dakota. The Northern Plains Ethnic Festival’s attendees get a real ethnic experience, as the structures are opened and the native foods of each group are served in and around the buildings.
